His Excellency, Ambassador Kwacha Chisiza met with representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Africa Division 3, Africa Department and SANYU Consultants, to discuss the progress of the expansion and rehabilitation of the Lufilya Irrigation Scheme. The survey, scheduled from February 2025 to July 2026, aims to define new development areas, identify irrigation facilities for rehabilitation, assess climate change impacts, enhance development capacity, and prepare an outline design. The initiative aims to boost rice production and tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
A new JICA Representative for the Malawi Office was introduced, and discussions were conducted with the team. The ambassador enquired about reverting to the original plan for expanding the M1 road by 6 km, which has been approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Nacala Corridor project has been discussed, and an agreement between Malawi and Mozambique has been established. The 132 kV KIA Substation project has been supported by Japan, and the embassy is advocating for additional assistance, particularly for the expansion of the M1 road.
