Luswenyo of Namibia, paid a visit to His Excellency Kwacha Chisiza, Malawi’s Ambassador to Japan, conveying their condolences to the people of Malawi and signed the book of condolence following the passing of the Vice President, Right Honorable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.
The visit, marked by somber reflection and warm camaraderie, underscored the deep sense of loss and mourning felt not only within Malawi but across the SADC region. Dr. Chilima, a respected leader and dedicated public servant, had made significant contributions to the socio-political landscape of Malawi and had endeared himself to many through his vision, leadership, and integrity.
His Excellency Kwacha Chisiza, deeply moved by the outpouring of support from the SADC ambassadors, expressed his gratitude for their heartfelt condolences and kind words.
The visit served as a poignant reminder of the strength of the SADC community and the bonds of friendship that unite its members. It showcased the spirit of compassion, empathy, and unity that defines the region and underlined the importance of coming together to offer comfort and support in times of loss and mourning.
The Late Right Honorable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima will be laid to rest on Monday, June 17, 2024. The Republic of Malawi will be in a state of mourning until July 1, 2024.

A major shift occurred in Malawi’s energy sector as a result of this occurrence. On March 6, 2024, the inauguration marked a major step forward in Malawi’s endeavors to upgrade its energy infrastructure and meet its growing electricity demands.
The capacity of the Old Town Substation has been increased from 37 MW to 50 MW, and there are 21,000 additional users. Within its sphere of influence, the project will help reduce the backlog of new power connection applications in the Lilongwe and Mchinji districts.
The handover ceremony was significant, and the Honorable Kawale and Dr. Tanaka both stressed the success of the substation project, its positive effects, and the promising future of Malawi’s energy sector, all of which would have far-reaching implications for many people. The transformational impact of the power station in addressing the nation’s energy demands and furthering Malawi’s 2063 plan for sustainable, inclusive, and reliable development were also highlighted, and the parties involved reaffirmed their faith in the long-term relationship between JICA and Malawi. Better energy accessibility, fewer power outages, stronger capacity building, and brighter socioeconomic prospects would all come from the power station’s installation in Malawi.
The program received $19 million from the Japanese government through JICA and $2 million from the Malawian government.
The JICA delegation conveyed its gratitude for the cordial reception they received in Malawi and commended President Chakwera on his exemplary leadership and the favorable results that have ensued from the projects funded by JICA in the nation. The robust and long-lasting diplomatic ties between Japan and Malawi were commended, emphasizing the reciprocal advantages that arise from the alliance and the shared dedication to promoting sustainable development objectives in the area.
The encounter between President Chakwera and JICA President Dr. Akihiko exemplified a mutual commitment to augmenting cooperation, nurturing originality, and spearheading consequential initiatives that will advance the socioeconomic development of Malawi. The dialogues conducted throughout the meeting have the potential to pave the way for fresh opportunities for collaboration and collaborative undertakings that will positively impact the economic growth and welfare of both countries, while also strengthening the amicable ties between Japan and Malawi.
